Sport 4U U14s & U16s Football Teams Win

Sport 4U U14s & U16s were both victorious at the latest football tournament held at Featherstone Sports Complex on the 16th April 2009. There was some exceptional football skills on show from Naz & Jav from the U14s team and some creative play from Savage and rock solid defending from Waz and some great saves from Choudry. The lads eventually cruised to victory in a 4-1 win in the final.

The U16s had a much tougher task in the final, taking on Airedale who beat them in the group stages 4-1. Sport 4U took the early lead by a great goal by Kaka, but Airedale were playing some exceptional football but struggled to find the equalizer. It was in the dying seconds of full time that Airedale scored and took the game into sudden death. Some great saves from Jaleel and strong defensive play from Shaz & Aqeel led to the amazing counter attack from Kaka & Dooda who scored a fantastic goal to seal the victory.

Well Done to Aqeel who was the player of the tournament!

My Life 3 Event

Young people from the Sport 4U Youth group attended the My Life 3 event held on the 9th April 2009 at the National Coal Mining Museum. It gave young people an exciting opportunity in the Wakefield district to explore issues that affect them and to work with key adults from across the district to talk about how they could work together to address these issues and make changes.

Key adults from various agencies attended the event, including Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, Health and the police. Cheryl Hobson from Family Services worked with young people from the Sport 4U youth group to look at how projects and services could benefit young people from across the district.

Young people highlighted 3 key projects and services that would benefit young people across the district. One was to provide a transport service to young people to get around the district for activities with free transport. Second was to improve playing areas for children and young people across the district. Thirdly, young people wanted more holiday clubs during half term and summer holidays.

The findings from the event will now be used to inform the review and development of local policies and strategies, including the Children and Young People’s Plan for the Wakefield District.

Tow Path Tidy Week

March 2009 @ Fall Ings Mooring

Young people from Sport 4U helped to give Fall Ings a make-over and had a good old-fashioned tidy up. Young people helped paint the bollards, gates and lock beams, create a native woodland with snowdrops and bluebells, build a willow compost for fallen leaves, cut back tree branches and shrubs, saw branches to make recycled fences, plant up newly areas – making places for wildfire to live and help out on the floating café.

The project was between British Waterways and NHS Wakefield Project Pugwash, with a lending hand from BTCV, Groundwork, Nacro, Turning Point, and Safe Anchor Trust. The Towpath Tidy Week was part of a Yorkshire-wide spruce-up of waterways in which 400 people took part, making it the most successful year so far.

A big thanks to Sam Davies and Helen Thackary from Groundwork for their help and support from the Sport 4U group.
