Boxercise
Recently a group accompanied by world champion Les D’Arcy visited Huddersfield Gas Boxing Club. The visit was set up by Mr Derek Smith, a former regimental Army Boxing Champion after visiting the Sport 4U Club to give boxing and skipping instruction to members. The chief guests at the Huddersfield Club was the former 3 times World Championship Boxing Contender, Heral Bomber Graham and Great Britain Rugby League Captain, Jamie Peacock.
Bomber Graham amazed the appreciative audience by his fitness and exceptional defensive skills which enabled him to box against more than a dozen opponents, sometimes two at a time in quick successions. In most bouts, Graham was able to explain different coaching points while still keeping his opponents at arms length and under control.
Wasim Hussain from Sport 4U group demonstrated his skipping skills for the champion while Fuhrum Malik and Raheeem Hussain demonstrated their boxing techniques. The young people had a photo shoot and autograph opportunity at the end.
Derek Smith, at aged 77, is the oldest boxing coach in Great Britain, earlier created a great deal of interest and amusement by shadow boxing to music from a mouth organ attached to his mouth. It is planned to inviteMr smith and some of his pupils tom make a return visit to the Sport 4U club for a training session and a social get together in the near future.

Sport Legacy
The Sports Legacy project aims to increase participation in athletics for young people by increasing capacity to deliver in communities. Kick racism out of football
The brand name of the campaign - Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football - was established in 1993. Kick It Out works throughout the football, educational and community sectors to challenge racism and work for positive change.
The Kick It Out Week Of Action is one of the most prominent anti-racism and community engagement initiatives in the country. The week has a strong community focus and celebrates the contribution made to football by black, Asian and other ethnic minorities, whilst continuing the call to challenge racism.
Black History Month, Ramadan and Diwali
The week of action is held during Black History Month and has coincided with Ramadan and Diwali. This enables opportunities for us all to celebrate these important periods.Communities, of all races, cultures and religious beliefs join together behind the unifying message ‘One Game, one Community’ during the Kick It Out Week of Action in October. The message is supported by the biggest names in football. Ronaldinho one of the biggest names in football says “people are the same, irrespective of the colour of their skin”. These were the kinds of messages that young people received on videos which were shown to young people during the week of action at City High Community Sports Centre.
There were a number of tournaments which were held at the City High Community Sports Centre during the week of action and all of the winning teams were selected to take part in a regional final on Saturday 4th November organised by Sport 4U. 8 teams participated and young people came from different parts of the Wakefield District.
Everyone that participated received leaflets with information on how to report racism and other relevant information. Everyone also received certificates, medals and runners up and finalists received trophies. Peter Lorimar, famous Leeds and England player in the late 1960’s and 1970’s also visited young people during the week of action and presented trophies.
Big thanks to everyone who supported the campaign and those that volunteered and sponsored the event.
Game on
The Midnight League have only been possible thanks to funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and The Football Foundation. They encourage some of the most at risk young people in coalfields areas to engage in a more positive activity in the evenings through organised football leagues at community facilities.
Although called Midnight Leagues, the football sessions actually take place at various times in the evenings. The original idea remains the same – to offer young people a positive and healthy option in their free time, where they can enjoy themselves in a safe and enjoyable environment.
The Midnight League runs throughout the year in Eastmoor and was one of the first to be piloted in Wakefield. Now there are a number of leagues that run throughout Wakefield.
Sport 4U made history by winning the first ever Yorkshire Regional Championship for Wakefield in 2005. A ceremony was held at the City High Community Sports Centre and MP Mary Creagh, and Mayor and Mayoress of Wakefield were proud to present the trophies to the winners.
In 2007, the U13 Regional Championship came home to Wakefield and Shaney Qayum was over the moon. He was also representing Sport 4U in the Eastmoor Midnight League and with his team mates was successful in winning the league.
Youth Sport Manager for WMDC, with assistance from Les D’Arcy were delighted to present the participants with medals and trophies.
Some of the individual awards were given Kashif Akbar (Fair Play), Shaney Qayum, (Top Goal Scorer), Robert Gollings (Best Goal Keeper), Ben Roberts and Idris Ali (Most Improved Players) and Jae, (Player of the League).
